Our Services > Preventative Care > Scaling and Root Planing/Arestin

Scaling and Root Planing (or deep cleaning) is done to remove tartar and hard crusty calculus (Tartar) that is loaded with bacteria, around and BELOW the gum line. (A professional polishing or prophylaxis removes only the soft sticky plaque that is above the gum line and performed on a healthy dentition).

Scaling
Scaling is procedure that meticulously removes contamination toxins, micro-organisms, plaque, and tartar that is rough and is below and under the gum line down to the bottom of the pocket.

Root Planing
Root planing involves smoothing the root surfaces of your teeth with thin curettes so gum tissue can more firmly reattach to roots that are clean and smooth to prevent tooth loss and sensitivity problems.

This can be uncomfortable for some patients. As an alternative to injectable anesthetics, Oraqix is used with deeper pocket cleaning. It is a special non-injection device that delivers topical anesthetic gel gently into the gum pockets thereby avoiding numbing of the lips and or tongue as can occur with injected local anesthetics. Oraqix mostly numbs the gum pocket itself.

Although scaling and root planing (SRP) is effective at reducing plaque and some bacteria, it doesn't kill all of the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. SRP is a mechanical procedure and the instruments used to perform SRP cannot always reach the bacteria that reside at the bottom of deep or difficult-to-reach periodontal pockets. For these pockets, Mathis Dental adds the locally administered antibiotic ARESTIN. ARESTIN is a small amount of antibiotic powder that is placed inside infected periodontal pockets just after our hygienist finishes the SRP procedure. Once ARESTIN is inserted, it immediately adheres to the periodontal pocket. Through a process the Antibiotic is slowly released and absorbed into the surrounding gum tissue. This allows for a “sustained release” of the antibiotic, meaning ARESTIN continues to work inside your gums for up to 21 days.
